Goal

Vision Essentials aimed to transform the traditional eyewear shopping experience into a modern, efficient, and customer-centered journey for both shoppers and opticians.

Objective

Design an iOS tablet app that modernizes the in-store eyewear experience by enabling opticians to guide customers through frame selection, prescription management, and purchase.

Research and Journey Map

1. Discovery

Conducted interviews with opticians and observed in-store shopping experiences to identify pain points. Developed personas and journey maps, then defined the ideal user flow to guide the proof of concept for validation.

2. Quick Access to Member Info

Designed a flow with patient identifier that complied with HIPAA guidelines, eliminating the need for users to log into the KP Health System to access patient records.

3. Simplified Frame Selection

Introduced barcode and SKU entry to initiate shopping, giving users access to Vision Essentials’ complete inventory across all locations.

4. Intuitive Lens Picker

Designed a step-by-step lens shopping workflow with contextual guidance at every stage, helping consumers select the best lenses for their needs.

5. Shopping Experience Beyond the Store

A summary screen presented transparent pricing, member benefits, and available discounts to help users make informed decisions. Print and wishlist features extended the shopping experience beyond the store, allowing members to review and continue their selections at home.

Outcome

After user validation and stakeholder approval, the proof-of-concept design was launched in collaboration with the vendor, deploying the app and handheld iPad cases in selected stores for usability testing.
